'Summit of the Sierras', 1874. The Sierra Nevada mountains in California and Nevada, USA. 'This is the majesty of their desolation - the spell of the unknown and the unvisited. Mighty gorges, with giant sides, bearing the traces of great glacial movements, and watched over by truly Alpine pinnacles of ice and snow, are the weird passes into the silent region that surrounds the highest peaks within the limits of the United States. In the bottom of these deep canons are lakes, frozen during the greater part of the year, and at other times lying with motionless water, never touched by canoe or keel'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]
