'John Lubbock', 1896. Portrait of banker, scientist and Liberal politician Sir John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury (1834-1913). His Prehistoric Times, first published in 1865, was one of the most influential archaeological books of the 19th century. In it Lubbock coined the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic for the first time.
