'Lord William Russell Receiving the Sacrament', 1886. Lord Russell (1639-1683), English politician, was among the founders of the Whig Party. Russell supported attempts in Parliament to exclude the Roman Catholic James II from succeeding to the throne. He was accused, on trumped-up evidence, of complicity in the Rye House Plot to murder Charles II. He was executed in 1683. After Alexander Johnston (1815-1891).
