A Gothic cloister with statues of the evangelists, the Cathedral of Evora, Portugal, 2009. The cloisters of Evora cathedral were built between 1317 and 1340 in Gothic style and access is gained to them through a portal lined by statues of the evangelists. Construction of the Romanesque Cathedral of Evora began in 1186. According to local legend, the fleet of Vasco de Gama had their flags blessed here in 1497. The Historic Centre of Evora was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
