Captain John Smith taken prisoner by the Indians, Virgina, 1607 (c1880). John Smith, a member of the Jamestown colony in Virginia, was captured by Native Americans and brought before their chief, Powhatan. According to Smith's account, his life was spared after the intervention of Powhatan's daughter Pocahontas. It is not certain whether the event ever took place. From Smith's Virginia.
