Johann Kaspar Lavater, Swiss physiognomist and theologian, early 19th century. Physiognomy is the art of reading psychological traits from physical characteristics. Lavater (1741-1801) attempted to make Physiognomy a science. From an early 19th century English edition of Essays in Physiognomy by JK Lavater, translated by Thomas Holcroft (1744-1809).
