Mormon baptism by total immersion, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1853. The Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) was founded by Joseph Smith in 1830. Smith was murdered by a mob in Illinois in 1844, after which Brigham Young led the Mormons on an 1100-mile trek to Utah, founding Salt Lake City. From Illustration. ( Paris, 1853).
