Scenes from the First Crusade, 1096-1099 (14th century). The First Crusade was ordered by Pope Urban II at the Council of Clermont in 1095, with the objective of recapturing Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslim Turks. Commanded by Godfrey of Bouillon and other prominent barons, the Crusade set off in 1096 and succeeded in capturing Jerusalem in 1099, massacring most of the city's inhabitants, Muslim, Jewish and even Eastern Christian.
