Richard I, Coeur de Lion landing at Jaffa (Joppa), September 1191, (c1880). Richard the Lionheart (1157-1199) was the eldest son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and second Angevin (Plantagenet) king of England, (1189-1199). During the Third Crusade (1189-1192) Richard led the crusaders against the great Muslim leader, Saladin. Richard is reported to have jumped into the water crying Cursed for ever be he who follows me not! Richard held Jaffa until July 1192 when it fell to Saladin. Richard recaptured it on 31 July, and in September Richard and Saladin signed the Treaty of Jaffa guaranteeing a three-year truce.
