American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) visited Alfred, Lord Tennyson at his home at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight for two days in July 1868. Whilst he was there, Tennyson introduced him to his near neighbour Julia Margaret Cameron. In Helmut Gernsheim's biography of Cameron, he relates how Tennyson introduces him with the words: 'I have brought you a great man; he will let you immortalise him...I will leave you now Longfellow. You will have to do whatever she tells you. I will come back soon and see what is left of you.'
