Viscount Castlereagh, early 1800s, (1941). Robert Stewart, 2nd Marquess of Londonderry (1769-1822), known as Lord Castlereagh, was an Irish/British statesman. He served as British Foreign Secretary and as leader of the House of Commons. As Chief Secretary for Ireland, he was involved in putting down the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and was instrumental in securing the passage of the Irish Act of Union of 1800. He committed suicide, possibly as a result of mental illness caused by syphilitic meningitis. From British Statesmen, by Enest Barker. [Collins, London, 1941]
