'Unpleasant Position of King Harold', c1860, (c1860). Harold II (c1022-1066) was the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. In 1064, Harold was apparently shipwrecked at Ponthieu. France and detained by the Count of Ponthieu. William I (c1028-1087) embarked on a rescue, paying the ransom in return for HaroldÆs loyalty to his claim to the throne.
