Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885), American soldier and statesman, c1860s. Ulysses Simpson Grant commanded the Union (northern) army in the American Civil War from March 1864, leading it to final victory the following year. He was elected the 18th President of The USA in 1869, holding office until 1877.
