Transfer of prisoners from the prison of Jerez de la Frontera to the Cadiz jail, Spain, 1883. Jerez prison had been a former convent of friars. Converted into a jail, it housed hundreds of prisoners in poor conditions, alleged perpetrators and co-perpetrators of crimes attributed to the anarchist and secret organization called 'La Mano Negra' (The Black Hand). This criminal gang acted in Andalusia in 1882 and 1883, amidst class struggle in the Andalusian countryside. The authorities decided to transfer the most dangerous prisoners to the prison of Cadiz. From "La Ilustración Española y Americana" (The Spanish and American Illustration), 1883.
