Title page from van Keulen's Chart Atlas, 1682. 'De Groote Nieuwe Vermeerderde Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Werelt. Verstoonende in sigh alle de Zee-Kusten des Aardtryks...'. King Neptune, being crowned, holds a pair of dividers over a celestial globe. Another allegorical figure studies a book of maps. They are surrounded by animals and people from around the world. The van Keulen atlas first appeared in 1681, and grew in successive editions to eventually comprise almost 400 charts covering all the oceans and seas of the known world.
