The shooting of Admiral John Byng on board the 'Monarque', 1757. British admiral John John Byng (1704-1757) was shot to death on board the Monarque, at Spithead, for Misbehaviour before the French Fleet in the Mediterranean. John Byng was court-martialled and executed for failing to do his utmost during the Battle of Minorca.
