The Lovers of Teruel, 1857. Depiction of the last scene of "The Lovers of Teruel", a drama written in 1837 by Juan Eugenio Hartzenbusch Martínez (1806-1880), which became one of the favourite themes for writers and artists of the 19th century. Its popularity was, in no small part, due its exaltation of the most beautiful death for the Romantic spirit: death for the sake of love. Here we witness the moment when Isabel de Segura falls dead beside the corpse of her beloved, Juan Diego Martínez de Marcilla.
