The Importunate Ass, 1928. This headpiece of La Fontaine's 'The Ass and the Lap-dog' appeared in an advertisement for the Lanston Monotype Corporation. Jean de La Fontaine spent 26 years writing his versions of the fables in the late 17th century. The ass of this tale, in trying to become better liked, copies the lap-dog and embraces his master, only to be beaten with a stick- the moral being not to over-step one's talents and station in life.
