'The German Gunboat "Panther"', (1919). 'On July 1st, 1911, Germany, without warning or explanation, dispatched the warship "Panther" to the closed port of Agadir [in Morocco], "to safeguard the persons and property of German subjects." As there were no German subjects or property to safeguard, a grave crisis ensued, exorbitant demands were made by Germany which were pressed with an insistence that compelled France to break off all negotiations. The incident created great bitterness of feeling in this country [Britain] and in Germany.' From "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. I, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight.
