'The Fall of Icarus', 1834. Lord Brougham portrayed as Icarus of Greek myth, who flew too close to the Sun with wings made of wax. The Sun contains the face of King William IV, suggesting that recent speeches of Brougham's implied too great a degree of familiarity with the monarch. The melting wings are lettered "Edinburgh Review," "Society of Useful Knowledge," "Penny Encyclopædia," "Morning Chronicle," and "Globe," all journals to which the Chancellor contributed articles praising the king.
