Tarpan, 1830. The Tarpan was a small European wild horse, dun-coloured with a dark mane and tail. Small herds survived in remote parts of central Europe, but became extinct in the early 20th century. From William Jardine's Naturalist's Library series. (Edinburgh, 1830).
