Shackleton's ship, the nimrod, among the ice in McMurdo Sound, the winter land quarters of the British Antarctic Expedition.' Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922), British explorer, Antarctica, 1909. Shackleton made three expeditions to the Antarctic, but is best known for the 'Endurance' expedition of 1914-1916 when the ship became trapped in the ice and Shackleton and five colleagues made an epic journey to South Georgia to seek rescue. After an original painting by George Marston (1882-1940) c1908 the expedition artsist. Taken from 'A Book of Discovery', published by T. C. & E. C. Jack Ltd. 1912.
