Rutherford Alcock (1809-1897), English army surgeon and diplomat, 1877. During his diplomatic career, Alcock held the posts of Consul in Fuchow (1844), Shanghai (1846), first Consul-general to Japan (1858-1865) and Minister-plenipotentiary in Peking (1865-1871).
