Robert Clive receiving the land revenues of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, 1765, (early 19th century). After his defeat of the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey, British military officer Clive (1725-1774) was appointed the first governor and commander-in-chief in India in 1763. In 1765, the Mughal Emperor granted the East India Company responsibility for running the civil administration in Bengal, as depicted in this painting, commissioned by the East India Company from Benjamin West. When Clive left India in January 1767 he had a fortune of £900,000.
