Proclamation of the French Republic in Paris, 1870. On Sunday 4 September 1870, Léon Gambetta (1838-1882), member of the government of National Defence, proclaimed the French Third Republic in the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville in Paris, following the fall of the Second Empire after the defeat of Sedan, the capture of Napoleon III and the clamour of the Parisian people and the republicans. From "Historia de la Guerra de Francia y Prusia" (History of the War between France and Prussia), Volume I, published in Barcelona, 1870.
