Prince Eugene of Savoy, French-born Austrian soldier, 1718 (1906). From the original painting by Jacobus van Schuppen, in the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam. Regarded as one of the outstanding military strategists of his time, in the War of the Spanish Succession Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) was one of the allied commanders supporting John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) with whom he participated in the victory at Blenheim. He also fought against the Turks, notably taking Belgrade from them in 1718, and went on to become Governor of the Austrian Netherlands. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906.
