'Portrait of Two Gentlemen', c1778, (c1912). 'Mr Huddesford and Mr Bampfylde', painting in the Tate Gallery, London. George Huddesford (1749-1809), dressed in a black silk van Dyck costume, was a painter and pupil of Reynolds. John Bampfylde (1754-1797) fell in love with Reynolds's niece, Mary Palmer, and went mad after she rejected his advances. Here he holds a print of Joseph Warton. Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) promoted the ‘Grand Style’ in painting, and was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He held the position of Principal Painter in Ordinary to the king. His work is held in galleries and museums around the world. Illustration from Reynolds - Masterpieces in Colour, by Samuel Levy Bensusan. [TC & EC Jack, Frederick A Stokes Co, London & New York, c1912]
