Philippa of Hainault, (1851). Philippa of Hainault (c1314-1369) was Queen Consort of Edward III of England. She acted as regent on several occasions when Edward was on the continent. She was noted for her compassion and gentleness, as exemplified by the occasion when she pleaded with the king to spare the lives of the Burghers of Calais after the Siege of Calais in 1347.
