'Oberon and Titania', 1862. As the Civil War in America continued, President Davis of the Confederation issued a conscription notice to call all men between the ages of 18 and 45 to arms. The issue of slavery was coming to the forefront of the differences between North and South. Here we see President Lincoln in the guise of Oberon being rebuffed by Miss Virginia in the guise of Titania. Virginia was vehemently opposed to the abolition of slavery, and so Titania refuses to allow Lincoln to buy the child slave whose hand she is holding. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 5, 1862.
