'Natives Gathered Round Them', c1908, (c1920). Captain Matthew Flinders (1774-1814), English navigator and cartographer, who was the first to circumnavigate Australia and identify it as a continent. George Bass (1771-1803), British naval surgeon and explorer of Australia. Finders and Bass set out from Sydney in 1795 to explore the south coast, they proved that Tasmania was an island, separated by water from the mainland of Australia. From Our Empire Story, by H. E.
