My Old Friend Homer, 1872. Mr Gladstone, the Liberal Prime Minister, was known to read Homer regularly, and here, the ghost of the great man has come to ask Gladstone how he could allow his authority to be usurped by the masses. This relates to the outbreak of a number of strikes during the year. These included bakers, carpenters, the Metropolitan Police and London's gas-workers. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 14, 1872.
