Mrs. Mary May and Her Daughters, Maria Emilia, Louisa, and Sophia Margaret, 1780. Mary May and her husband Joseph were born in Portugal where they lived until the 1770s. They were connected to successful Lisbon-based wine merchant families. Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman had a successful career in London and Rome. From 1769 until 1782, she was an annual exhibitor with the Royal Academy of Art in London.
