Michael O'Laughlen, member of the Lincoln conspiracy, 1865 (1955). A former Confederate soldier, O'Laughlen (1840-1867) was an old friend of John Wilkes Booth and one of his first recruits to his plot to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln and hold him to ranson in exchange for the release of Confederate prisoners of war. O'Laughlen denied any involvement in the assassination of the president but was found guilty of conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in 1867 during an outbreak of yellow fever at the prison on the Dry Tortugas off Florida. A print from Mathew Brady Historian with a Camera by James D Horan, Bonanza Books, New York, 1955.
