'Land! Land! Land!', Christopher Columbus arriving in America, 1492 (late 19th or early 20th century). Sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Columbus (1451-1506) set out in 1492 to discover a westward route to Asia. He landed on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, claiming it for Spain.
