Onlookers grin while Jews are forced to perform menial tasks after the Anschluss: 'the violent shock which awakened a dormant sense of Jewish identity'. Hitler pressured his native Austria into unification (Anschluss) with Germany in March 1938. German troops entered the country on 12 March and Hitler later made a triumphant entry into Vienna.
