"Going to the Country", 1885. This cartoon depicts the Liberal's former Prime Minister, William Gladstone, coming in at the door. Inside, Lord Salisbury is the new Conservative Prime Minister. His Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Michael Hicks Beach is emptying the chest of all the Liberal business, whilst the intelligent, yet erratic Lord Randolph Churchill, Secretary for India, is polishing the boots with India Black. Gladstone had recently expressed approval of the new Conservative administration's plans, and had offered to lend his support. From "Punch, or the London Charivari", July 18, 1885.
