'General Grant and a colored guard', 1902. 'The guard, being under instructions, would not permit even General Grant to pass before he had thrown away his cigar'. Ulysses S. Grant, future president of the United States, was a frequent cigar smoker. Here, an African-American soldier, putting safety first, refuses to let the general pass while smoking.
