French First World War generals Joseph Joffre and Ferdinand Foch, Flanders, 1914. Joffre (left) (1852-1931) was Commander-in-Chief of the french Army at the outset of World War I, a position he held until 1916. Foch (1851-1929) commanded the French 9th Army at the Battle of the Marne, after which he was promoted to command the Northern Army in October 1914. He went on to become Supreme Allied Commander in March 1918.
