'Edward pawning the Crown with the Archbishop of Treves', c1860, (c1860). Edward III (1312-1377) declared himself the rightful heir to the French throne in 1337 but his claim was denied due to the Salic law, this started what is known as the Hundred Years' War. Edward needed to raise funds for a war against France and is reported to have pawned his crown to the archbishop of Treves. From The Comic History of England, Volume I, by Gilbert A A'Beckett.
