Edsel Ford turning the first sod at the site of Ford's plant at Dagenham, Essex, late 1920s. Ford performing the ceremony of turning the first sod to symbolise the beginning of construction. When production began at the site in 1931, Ford's Dagenham plant was the most modern and best-equipped car factory in the world outside of Detroit. It was also the largest car production plant in Europe.
