Dwight D Eisenhower, American general, 1944. Dwight D Eisenhower (1890-1969) was appointed Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe prior to the D Day landings in Normandy in 1944. After the defeat of Nazi Germany he served as the first Supreme Commander of NATO from 1951, before being elected the 34th President of the United States in 1953.
