Dr John Jeffries, American balloonist, 1786. Jeffries (1744-1819) during a balloon ascent to investigate the atmospheric temperature. On 7 January, 1785, Jeffries and French balloonist Jean Pierre Blanchard made the first successful balloon flight across the English Channel.
