Deception of Captain Wallis by Queen Oberea, 1820-1839. Scene from Samuel Wallis's voyage of circumnavigation in HMS 'Dolphin', undertaken from 1766-1768. Wallis is pictured at Tahiti, watched by the island's queen, Oberea. Wallis is believed to have been the first European to visit Tahiti, which he sighted on 18th June 1767. Plate 45 from Le Costume Ancien et Moderne by Jules Ferrario.
