Cast of modillion faced with acanthus leaf, oak apples and ornate decorations, late 18th century-early 19th century. A modillion is an ornate bracket underneath a cornice which helps support the structure. This particular modillion is highly ornate, decorated with a large oak leaf with numerous lobes and acorns as well as scrolling vines and flowers on the sides. The cast is taken from an original object in the Museo Pio-Clementino (Pio-Clementine Museum) in the Vatican Museums in Rome. Scholars believe this modillion came from an ancient classical building.
