Books and Scholars’ Accouterments, late 1800s. First produced around the second half of the eighteenth century, chaekgado (literally, "pictures of bookshelves") flourished throughout the 1800s. First developed as a royal emblem during the reign of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800), chaekgado became a popular furnishing item among aristocrats. The CMA screen consists of 35 compartments containing a variety of artful utilitarian objects, and antiquities in addition to multiple volumes of books.
