'Battle of New Orleans - Death of General Pakenham', (1878). The Battle of New Orleans, fought on 8 January 1815, was the final battle of the War of 1812. Technically the war was already over after the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, but the news had not yet reached the other side of the Atlantic. The battle resulted in a decisive American victory, with the British compelled to withdraw from Louisiana. One of the British commanders, Major-General Pakenham, was fatally wounded leading an attack on the American positions.
