Art Arfons with 'Green Monster' Land Speed Record car, c1966. Arfons set three Land Speed Records in his jet-powered 'Green Monster' car in the 1960s, the fastest being 576.553 mph in 1965. In 1966, when attempting to regain the record from his great rival Craig Breedlove, a wheel came off the car when travelling at over 600 mph. Arfons survived without serious injury, but never regained the record.
