Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, 1900. The 34th Sultan, Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918) came to the throne in 1876. He was effectively the last Sultan, because although his brother Mehmed V replaced him after he was deposed in 1909, real power and authority resided elsewhere within the government.
