'A Married Couple with Three Children', c1668-1669, (1967). Alternative titles: Portrait of a Family or the Brunswick Family Portrait. Here, more powerfully perhaps than in any other work of Rembrandt's, the element of portraiture is raised to the level of symbolism. This mother with her child is like the Madonna with the infant Jesus in certain Renaissance paintings where she is shown receiving the tribute of saints or donors.
