Buckingham Gate, 1872. Woman and child passing people sleeping in an arch of the York Watergate, once the river entrance to York House, the Duke of Buckingham's London mansion on the Strand. Built in 1626, the gate gave access to the Thames. The building of the Thames Embankment in the 1860s left it 150 yards from the river, in Embankment Gardens.
